Homemade Dog Food

Homemade Dog Food

Recently it seems that animal food recalls are happening more often then ever before. Being an animal lover and owner, I can say I’m getting sick of worrying about what I’m feeding my animals. I have finally made the decision to feed my animals homemade food, so I know and can control the ingredients I’m putting into the food. I started with my dog. She is a 6 year old Rottweiler and has joint problems. The store bought food had glucosamine included in it,  so I had to remember to compensate for that.

I did my research and found that dogs need a mixture of 40 percent meat, 30 percent vegetables, and 30 percent starches in their food. Add a tiny bit of cooked garlic in the food which is also a natural flea repellent. Don’t use raw or a lot of garlic because this can cause your dog to become sick. Use oatmeal, pasta, rice, or potatoes for your dog’s starch requirement. And lastly keep cooked dog food in the refrigerator no longer than three days.

Below are a few great recipes to start off with. Combine this with the store bought food for the first week to help your dog adjust. You can add one cooked scrambled egg to both recipes as well, but I would rotate it out. Variety is good for your dog.

I also had to compensate for the glucosamine in the store bought food. I put my dog on glucosamine pills instead from my all natural grocery store. These pills are for dogs, not humans because giving animals human pills should never be done. My dog has been great with the switch and its saving me some money. I also put in left over vegetables or pasta from my families dinner, so there is never any waste.
