If you are an artist yourself or just like to collect art, protecting that piece of artwork is critical in making the piece last a long time. Artwork, especially if not behind glass, is exposed to all the harmful elements. Dust, sunlight, heaters, artificial light, and many more household items. To offer protection to artwork, most artists will varnish their art before selling it, but the buyer should always ask before purchasing. I always varnish my art at least twice to ensure protection, but if you are unsure if that art you bought was varnished, I would do it yourself. It is easy, not expensive, and protects that valuable piece of art.
To varnish a piece of art…
You can purchase your varnish at any arts and crafts store.
Can choose from spray or brush on varnish. ( I use spray)
Read the directions and always do the varnishing outside.
I place my art on an easel or hook it on a wall. I start by spraying in even coats the front and the sides of the art piece.
I repeat 2 - 3 times letting each coat dry before reapplying.
